A honeypot is a hidden field added to a signup form, invisible to human visitors but visible to automated bots, that traps and identifies spam submissions without requiring any extra step from a genuine subscriber.

How a Field Nobody Sees Actually Works

The mechanism is simple once you see it: a form includes an extra input, styled with CSS to be invisible or positioned off-screen, that a real person browsing the page never sees or interacts with. This is what is a honeypot form field at its core, a trap only a machine would fall into. 

 

A bot scraping and auto-filling every field on a page, however, fills it in along with everything else, since it can’t distinguish a hidden field from a visible one.   • A honeypot adds zero friction for real users, since they never even know the trap field exists.

Where a Honeypot Alone Isn't Enough
